Research Shows Japandi Style is On The Rise

Did you know that interest in Japandi has been increasing massively since 2019?

Recent Google Trends data from 2019 to 2024 shows that interest for the search term ‘Japandi’ has seen a steady increase over the past 5 years. This shows more homeowner enthusiasts are interested in going for a Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetic for their home decor. This has been the case not just for the UK either, a similar trend has been seen worldwide, over the same timeframe. This works in correlation with the rise of the Japandi trend that has taken the world by storm over the last couple of years.

The global appeal of Japandi can be attributed to its universal aesthetic, which blends seamlessly with various contextual contexts. The trend’s emphasis on natural materials, clean lines and sense of tranquillity resonates with people worldwide, making it a popular choice for homeowners seeking a timeless and harmonious interior design.

Are the searching public more focused in their taste?

When you compare both terms Japandi and Minimalism, the more niche term Japandi has become the dominating term for searchers to use when it comes to a minimalism design. Are the public getting smarter with how they search for styling inspiration?

The graph below shows that in September 2019, minimalism took a significant lead worldwide up until February 2023, which is when japandi took over as the in demand term.  A caveat is that ‘Minimalism’ as a term can include a wide range of concepts, but the data is interesting nonetheless. The amount of people searching for Japandi vs Minimalism has switched, and in 2024 digital demand for this is far greater.

Japandi is often described as a softer approach to minimalism with a marriage between Scandinavian simplicity and the minimal designs often associated with Japanese minimalism.

Are these search trends increasing in specific sub-regions?

The findings also allow us to see where people are searching for these terms.

For the United Kingdom, the data shows that more people are searching for the term ‘japandi’ mostly in England, then followed by Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Where in the world do we see Japandi surging the most? Google Trends data is suggesting that people are searching for the term Japandi the most in the Netherlands, followed by Singapore and Poland. Interestingly, the UK comes in 20th place across the 60 regions mentioned, despite the UK seeing an upward trend. It will be interesting to see how Japandi takes shape in the world of interior design in the years to come.
